This course covers the hazards and rules associated with manual handling operations. Delivered in a dynamic and informative style, candidates will use familiar on site materials to develop safer handling principles.

On successful completion candidates will be awarded an JMS Consultants Certificate

Manual Handling Training

We are proud to introduce ‘Best Foot Forward’, our innovative manual handling training package which was designed by Dave McDonald, one of our trainers in 2008. Breaking away from the outdated ‘Knees bent – back straight’ philosophy this package is well received and participants consistently give us excellent endorsements.

With a wealth of training experience, our Trainers have delivered Manual Handling training successfully to a diversity of blue chip clients and business sectors including factories, stores, headquarters, quarries and landfill operations. This site based training is the key to success and it enables staff to practice handling familiar materials in their own environment, solving any issues real time.

Our training is always customer led and we offer total flexibility on delivery times, style and location. Courses can be delivered in different formats.

Course Delivery options

Full course (3 hours)

Delivery of the ‘Best Foot Forward’ manual handling course by JMS Consultants training staff. This course is delivered on site and covers all aspects of manual handling including site specific hazards, tasks and issues. Using our own BASICS approach we encourage the use of a few simple rules along with common sense to promote best practice.

BASICS is a tried and tested model which stands for:

B – Best Foot Forward: Stand with your feet apart and one foot slightly forward
A – Asses the load: Tilt or push with your hands to assess the load
S – Spine: Keep your spine in its natural position
I – Initiate with the legs: Lift using your legs, not your back
C – Control: Take your time and keep the load close to the body at all times
S – Stop twisting!: Moving your feet prevents a twist…and the biggest cause of injury!

Awareness briefs (60 - 90 minutes)

When time is at a premium and staff cannot be released for lengthy periods, this option covers the important elements of manual handling and concentrates on relevant safe handling techniques in the workplace.

Manual Handling Champion training package (2 days depending on numbers)

Originally designed for a major DC this comprehensive package aims to educate your site based trainers in the current practices employed to promote manual handling best practice.

The full package option allows successful candidates full delivery of the dynamic IOSH approved ‘Best Foot Forward’ training package and comprises the core elements of manual handling including:

• Definition of Manual Handling
• Current legislation
• How we get injured
• Safe Lifting Techniques
• Induction training techniques
• Identification of incorrect techniques and remedial actions
• Risk assessment

The full leased package comprises; ‘Best Foot Forward’ PowerPoint presentation; lesson plans; practical exercises; test papers; marking guides and supporting materials such as posters and handouts.

This cost effective solution allows complete customer flexibility but with the security of built in customer support from JMS Consultants which can include compliance visits with your trainers to ensure that standards of delivery are maintained and relevant.
