Managing Director, Jeff Regan,
spends a week in Vietnam
JMS Consultants began specialist training in November 2008 for PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Services, a Vietnam based provider of oil and gas drilling services. In March 2011, Jeff Regan, JMS Principal Consultant & Managing Director of OPTIS Europe Ltd, returned to deliver OPITO – accredited Authorised Gas Tester (AGT1) training for a number of personnel at Vung Tau in Vietnam.
In addition to organising the training, one of the course delegates, Ian Miller, Drilling Division HSE Manager (pictured 3rd from the left), commented on completion of the course;
“Bringing in internationally recognized training courses to our company will improve our development and assist in our company objectives to continuously improve our safety systems and upgrade training for our personnel. We would like to thank JMS Consultants for their professionalism in providing industry- leading training courses and look forward to working with them in the future.”
PVD offers drilling services on a contract basis, along with other well maintenance and conditioning services to petroleum exploration companies. It is also engaged in the provision of other energy technical services, such as geophysical surveying services, mapping services, mud logging services, oil spill control services and rental services of drilling equipment and oil rigs. Manual Handling – Knees bent,
back straight – NO WAY!
JMS Consultants go “Back to Basics” to reduce the cost of Manual Handling injuries. Using their pioneering “BASICS” approach to Manual Handling training, JMS encourage industry to follow their lead or risk falling foul of legislation.
BASICS is a mnemonic devised by JMS Training Consultant Dave McDonald which stands for:
B – Best foot forward: Stand with your feet apart and one foot slightly forward
A – Assess the load: Tilt or push with your hands to assess the load
S – Spine: Keep your spine in its natural position
I – Initiate with the legs: Lift using your legs, not your back
C – Control: Take your time and keep the load close to the body at all times
S – Stop Twisting: Moving your feet prevents a twist... and the biggest cause of injury!
But even the best guidelines are no substitute for a well structured training programme. It is how the course is delivered – hands-on and practical – which makes all the difference, as Dave McDonald, explains:
“At JMS, we have incorporated the latest developments in health and safety practice into hands-on courses; tailored to each company we work with. Manual handling requirements vary tremendously between industries and we teach by applying the latest techniques to each company’s individual working environment. Rather than concentrating entirely on theory, our trainers use practical, on-site examples using the BASICS model, to ensure that participants on our courses gain relevant experience in best practice that they can use in their everyday working lives.
Our programmes can include the special training of an in-house ‘Manual Handling Champion’ ensuring that there is a point of contact for everyone in the workplace, who can oversee and help their co-workers to implement our training correctly after the training programme is finished.

National Grid Grain LNG is the largest European liquefied Natural Gas terminal and National Grid is the UK leader in LNG importation. National Grid has a pioneering attitude to training and health and safety matters with over 2 million construction man hours worked without a lost time injury.
JMS consultants demonstrated its commitment to quality and flexibility by sending two of its most experienced trainers down to Kent to ensure that National Grid LNG got the best service possible.
Michael Coleman, JMS Consultants, stated “both Dave and I felt it important to ensure that the 14 National Grid Grain delegates got the most out of the course which we were able to tailor to meet the specific needs of the company. The delegates were extremely positive and responded well to our practical hands-on approach. We look forward to another visit in the near future”.
